Unicorn acquires The Rest Between Two Notes Selected Works by Fran Forman

Unicorn, the visual art imprint of Unicorn Publishing Group LLP, is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Boston based visual artist Fran Forman for a Fall 2019 publication of The Rest Between Two Notes, which was acquired by Unicorn's Chicago office. Forman is recognized for imbuing each of her images with strong, harmonious compositions and for her explosive use of color, light and shadow.

By integrating her contemporary photography with historical periods and various settings from around the world, Forman creates a world of illusion; upon closer inspection, what appears ordinary suggests an underlying tension and an aura of mystery. Expressed in the diffused colors of twilight and chiaroscruro, her images blur the boundaries between photography, late Renaissance painting, and film noir.

Forman’s photo-paintings explore those liminal and in-between moments - of coming and leaving, innocence and confidence, shadow and light, night and day, absence and connection, loss and longing, and not quite the past and not yet the future. Portals, both real and metaphorical, frequent her layered, complex and often dark dreamlike images. As a cinematographer writes a narrative with movement and sound, Forman writes with still images, where the images have no power except through their position and relationship. It is these relationships that elicit emotions of desire, vulnerability, and a desperate longing for connection.

The Rest Between Two Notes will feature over 100 remarkable color ‘photo-painting’ illustrations using elements from around the world, interspersed with comments from a diverse group of admirers.

Don Linn of Unicorn says: ‘We're very happy to be able to showcase the incredible talents of Fran Forman with The Rest Between Two Notes. Her work pulls the viewer into a visual and mental state the words can't do justice to. Composition, color, and incredible creativity fill these pieces with wonder. The result inspires a real dialogue between artist and viewer. I've not seen anything quite like it before and we think readers will return again and again to these works’

Fran Forman says of her work: ‘In blurring the boundary between photography and painting, my images suggest those in-between states - the moments between day and night, presence and absence, coming and going, then and now, elegance and decay, hope and despair, real and illusive. What you think you're seeing at first glance may appear ordinary, but a further look takes you elsewhere. You realize, it’s those in-between moments where the real story occurs’
